Everything is Figureoutable Book Summary

Life comes with many challenges, but according to Marie Forleo’s book – Everything is Figureoutable – there is always a way to figure things out. Her book offers a positive but pragmatic approach to life, suggesting that life circumstances are never fixed and can be modified at will.

The book is about changing your mindset to believe that change is possible. It inspires us to roll up our sleeves and work hard to achieve our goals. It teaches us how to combat our self-limiting ideas and other self-defeating behaviors, such as allowing fear and indecision to rule our lives.

The book consists of ten chapters that offer practical advice, exercises, and real-life examples to help us develop a figure-it-out mindset. The first few chapters focus on understanding the concept of “everything is figureoutable” and how to apply it to various areas of life, like career, relationships, and personal growth. Marie also emphasizes the importance of taking action and overcoming self-doubt and fear.

In the later chapters, Marie delves deeper into goal setting, time management, and developing resilience. She also discusses how to deal with setbacks and failures, and how to use them as opportunities for growth and learning.

Throughout the book, Marie shares her personal experiences and insights, which I loved because it made her ideas more relatable and accessible. She also includes inspiring stories of people who have overcome challenges and achieved their goals through the “figure-it-out” mindset.

“Everything is Figureoutable” is a practical and empowering guide that encourages us to take control of our lives and pursue our dreams with confidence and determination.

Below I’ve added a few more details by chapter, along with several good Everything is Figureoutable quotes and videos of Marie.

Everything is figureoutable is more than just a fun phrase to say. It's a practical, actionable discipline. A mantra that helps you operate at your best and achieve what you want. It's a mindset to help you solve meaningful problems, learn new skills, and find ways to help and contribute to others. Once adopted, this attitude will make you virtually unstoppable. Not unstoppable in the sense that everything will always go your way, because it won't. And not unstoppable in that you'll never get disappointed, face rejection, suffer defeat, or find yourself in extraordinarily challenging situations, because you definitely will. But unstoppable in the most profound sense. Meaning that nothing — no thing, no person, no fear, no limitation, no circumstance — will ever again have the power to hold you back. No matter what you're facing, you have what it takes to figure anything out and become the person you're meant to be.

Your Road Map To Results

You need the right road map to get where you want to go. This is the best way to reach your goals. If you have a good plan, the rest will fall into place.

Train your brain for growth. Consider your brain to be computer software. Imagine you open one bad email and let a deluge of viruses infect your PC. Your brain is similar, where negative thoughts and beliefs can detrimentally affect and infect you. These include worries about your abilities to achieve your goals, etc. These are viruses of doubt, fear, and confusion, and allowing one into your mind begins a cycle of negative ideas.

Negative, destructive thoughts and beliefs are normal, but it is important to be conscious of them and replace them instead with beliefs that empower us.

Positive thinking will not help us solve our problems, but negative thinking might make us feel as if we’re stuck in a rut we can’t get out of. This results in a vicious cycle.

The first destructive thought to watch out for is “I know this already.” Whenever we feel like we already know something, our minds disengage and shut down. The next time you hear yourself thinking or saying, “I know this already,” especially as you read this book, immediately catch that thought and switch to a growth-minded question. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?"

The second destructive thought virus is “This won’t work for me.” Instead of saying, “This won’t work for me,” which instantly shuts down the possibility of anything working, stop, catch it, and change it to a more productive question. Ask yourself, “How can this work me?” Asking this question again and again forces you to look beyond the obvious, stretch outside your cognitive comfort zone, and poke holes in your own status quo.

The Magic of Belief

The most powerful words in the universe are the words you say to yourself.

We will never try something if we fear we will fail. And, of course, if we never try, we will never succeed. It’s not that our abilities are limited; it’s our self-limiting beliefs. According to Marie, if we want to do anything, we must believe and trust in ourselves.

Eliminate Excuses

Excuses are dream killers. If we allow them, our excuses will keep us locked in a prison of our own making. As the adage goes, if you argue for your limitations, you get to keep them.

Excuses are natural, but if you’re sincerely devoted to figuring things out, all excuses must leave. Excuses are one of the most significant roadblocks we face. They are little lies we tell ourselves that limit who we are and what we can do.

Acknowledge how thin your excuses are and move forward.

The opportunity cost of wasting your time

Today’s Unconscious Cost

Total Time Spent per Year

What You Could’ve Accomplished Instead

30 minutes a day dickin’ around on your phone/social media

182.5 hours a year or 22 full 8-hour workdays

  • Michelle-Obama-like arms
  • Built a brand-new website
  • Learned how to meditate

60 minutes a day on news, email, and celebrity gossip

365 hours a year or 45 full 8-hour workdays

  • Written a first draft of your book
  • Launched a new revenue stream
  • Secured a raise or made a career change

Opportunity cost is no joke. Every choice has a price. Everything you say yes to means you’re saying no to something else. Translation? Each time you pick up your brain-draining gadget and say YES to watching another cat video, you’re saying NOPE to ever reaching your biggest and most important long-term goals.

How To Deal With The Fear of Anything

According to Marie, 9 out of 10 times, our fears are directives. We should therefore not be afraid of them, because they are signposts leading us in the path our soul desires. She says we should deal with our fears forcefully, and accept that we will make stupid mistakes from time to time.

You believing and behaving as though everything is figureoutable will radically change your life. But when the people around you—friends, family, and colleagues—also believe and behave as though everything is figureoutable, you’ll become capable of experiences and achievements beyond your wildest dreams. First, it’s way more fun to solve problems and overcome challenges together. Second, a community you can count on instantly multiplies the mental, emotional, spiritual, and creative resources available. Third, you’re more likely to persevere in the face of setbacks when you have the support of others. Plus, the collaborative mix of ideas, strengths, and diverse perspectives often leads to far greater, richer results rooted in a deeper sense of purpose.

Define Your Dreams

The greatest approach to figuring out what you want to do with your life is to engage, then take action. Stop thinking and start doing. Action produces clarity.
Indecision is harmful to your ambitions. You never know how you’ll react to something unless you give it a shot.

Consider what you most desire in life. You know deep down that you can attain your goal. You already have the tools; all you need to do now is learn how to use them.

Determine your life goals and write them down! Writing down your goals has been shown to increase your chances of success by 42% over not writing them down.

Make a list of your dreams. Post them on the refrigerator. Fill your wallet with them. Look at it every day, and odds are it will happen, eventually.

Start Before You're Ready

Getting into the habit of starting things before you’re ready is a terrific approach to accelerate your learning and growth. This is effective. Run, don’t walk towards projects that make you uncomfortable, because these are the projects that will help you grow.

Break down your dream into digestible bits to help you get there.

It’s all about growth, and taking one small step forward is preferable to being stagnant and doing nothing.

Reach out for support when necessary, but keep going forward. The growing zone will soon become your comfort zone, and you’ll wonder why you were ever afraid to start.

Progress, Not Perfection

Perfectionism at its core isn't about high standards. It's about fear. Fear of failure. Fear of looking stupid, fear of making a mistake, fear of being judged, criticized, and ridiculed. It's the fear that one simple fact might be true: You're just not good enough.

Forget about doing things perfectly. It’s a destructive myth. Instead, push yourself to high standards and make consistent progress.

Many of us believe the notion that if this was our destiny, it would be simple. In actuality, the struggle is a litmus test to discover how badly you really desire the thing you’re pursuing.

We must keep in mind that little by little adds up to a lot. And the more determined we are, the more probable it is that we will achieve our goals.

Refuse To Be Refused

You can do whatever you set your mind to if you just roll up your sleeves, get in there, and do it. Everything is figureoutable.

You will be ridiculed and scrutinized whenever you try something new. This is typical. Ignore what others say. Instead of letting it bring you down, allow put-downs to energize you.

On our path to achievement, we will undoubtedly face hurdles that appear to be insurmountable. But this is where we must decide that no matter what, we will find a way. When you have strong enough reasons to motivate you, you can achieve anything because reasons power results.

Whether it’s work, relationship, or health related—I have no shame in reaching out and saying, “I know this is figureoutable, but I’m having a hard time seeing which way to go. Can we talk it through?” The reason I can do that is because I invest in my friendships. Nothing is more important to me than my relationships. I do my best to be a proactive source of love, encouragement, and support for my friends’ dreams, and you can do the same.

The World Needs Your Special Gift

You’re one-of-a-kind. You are a once-in-a-lifetime colossal event in the cosmos. As a result, when you have an idea, make it a reality. The world appreciates diversity. There is always space for you.

Note from the author

I love “Everything is Figureoutable”. I have read it multiple times, and I reference it often. It has changed my life in many ways. For example, in the morning, when I’m struggling to get out of bed, I remind myself of the opportunity cost of staying in bed, instead of getting up and doing what I know I need to do to move forward. It has also changed my way of thinking. Obstacles no longer bother me as much because I know that if I put my head to it, I can figure out how to overcome them.

I hope it adds value to your life, too.
